And so it begins....

Five years ago, I signed up for a basic pottery class on a whim with a friend.

Living so close to Seagrove, NC for so many years and only recently having made trips there, I was taken with the beauty of so many talented potters’ creations.  Each potter’s works was so different from the others and yet so perfect in their simplicity.   Going in, I thought I’d learn what it takes to make a plate or a mug and then tick something off my bucket list.  Little did I know that one lump of clay would change my life forever. That first class sparked a passion I didn’t even know I had, and since then, my hands have rarely been free of clay.

My journey into pottery started like most—a few misshapen mugs, plates that warped on the rims, and a vase that still makes me laugh every time I see it.  But with each piece, I discovered more about the art, the process, and myself. Pottery has become more than just a creative outlet; it’s a form of mindfulness, a way to slow down and appreciate the joy of making something from scratch.

This blog is a space where I’ll share my adventures in clay—from the triumphs of finally mastering a tricky repair to the disasters of accidentally picking up a bone-dry piece too quickly and having it break into pieces (hint: it’s not pretty). I’ll talk about some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way, explore different techniques I’ve been taught or learned on my own, and even share the stories behind some of my favorite pieces. Whether you’re a fellow potter, an aspiring clay enthusiast, or just curious about the process, I hope you’ll find something here to inspire and entertain you.

Pottery has taught me that creativity is about the journey, not the destination. It’s about embracing imperfection (which for me was very hard!), finding beauty in the unexpected, and learning from your mistakes and moving on to the next project. I’m excited to take you along on this journey and share the ups, downs, and everything in between.

So, grab a cup of coffee (bonus points if it’s in a handmade mug) and join me as we explore the wonderful world of clay together!
